Oklahoma Sooners 2008 Football Season
The 2008 Oklahoma Sooners football schedule began with the team ranked fourth in both the Associated Press
Poll and the USA Today Coaches' Poll. The Sooners beat each of the first five opponents by 25 points or more before
they faced the number five ranked team, the Texas Longhorns. In a see-saw game Oklahoma took a late lead at 35-30,
then Texas came from behind with 15 unanswered points and upset the Sooners at by the final score of 45-35. The
Sooners could only gain 48 rushing yards while giving up 161 on the ground. Bradford also threw 2 interceptions in
the loss. After the loss, the Sooners sank to number four in the AP Poll and number six in the USA Today Poll.
Meanwhile Texas became the new number one team in both polls.
They soon rebounded by defeating the sixteenth ranked Jayhawks in Norman and won on the road at Kansas
State. By Week eight , the Oklahoma was ranked fourth in the AP Poll, fifth in the USA Today Coaches' Poll and
fourth in the BCS behind the Texas Longhorns, Alabama's Crimson Tide, and the Penn State Nittany Lions. The Sooners
went on to score 60 or more points against each of their next three opponents beating them by more than 30 points
each. They got a home victory over Nebraska and road wins at Texas A&M and second ranked Texas Tech. The Texas
Tech win by the Sooners would result in a National Championship controversy as far as the title game match up was
concerned. Because Texas Tech upset Texas and a previous loss by Penn State against Iowa, the Sooners were ranked
third in the Associated Press Poll and number two in the USA Today Coaches' Poll ahead of Texas. However, Texas
would be number two in the BCS followed by Oklahoma at number three. Alabama held unto number one in all polls with
an undefeated record.
By closing out the Oklahoma Sooners football
schedule with a win against Oklahoma State and Alabama's loss to Florida the Sooner's became number two
in the Associated Press poll, and number one in both the USA Today Coaches' Poll and the BCS standings. There was
a three way tie between Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas Tech in the Big 12 South Standings Each team suffered one
loss at the hands of the other and this caused fans, particularly the Texas fans, to cry foul. The Big 12
tie-breaker was for the team with the highest BCS ranking to play for the Big 12 Title. By beating nineteenth
ranked Missouri, wiiner of the Big 12 north division, would assure Oklahoma the number one ranking in both the USA
Today Coaches' Poll and the BCS, despite a number two ranking in the Associated Press Poll. Texas would then finish
number three in all polls and be ineligible to play in the National Title game.
Sam Bradford would win the Heisman Trophy and be
named by the Associated Press as Player of the Year for 2008. On January 8, 2009 the Oklahoma Sooners were
defeated 24-14 by the Florida Gators in the BCS Championship game at Dolphins Stadium in Miami. The Gators were
named 2008 College National Champions. This was the fourth time that the Sooners played for the National
Championship under Coach Stoops. They were defeated three times in the title game under Stoops. The
previous two losses were to the USC Trojans and The LSU Tigers. They will start the 2009 season with another
tough Oklahoma Sooners football schedule.
